James 3:15, How to Test What You Hear

When we are unlearning our affection for the knowledge of good and evil, it is important to memorize these verses to test what we hear:

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.  James 3:17

The mind of Christ has defined characteristics.  What He speaks to us by His Holy Spirit will never stray from these characteristics.  His wisdom is:

  • pure
  • peaceable
  • gentle
  • easy to be entreated
  • full of mercy and good fruits
  • without partiality
  • without hypocrisy

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. James 3:15

In stark contrast, wisdom not from above is defined by earthly, sensual, and devilish characteristics.  Although these characteristics may seem easy to spot, it is important to remember that the serpent deceives us by making things appear, “good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise.”  This wisdom may look good but its fruit produces envy, strife, confusion and every evil work. Test everything you hear.  Wisdom from above will pass the test.
