John 7:24, Judgment vs. Righteous Judgment

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.  John 7:24

Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, was given a mission.  When and how this mission came to her we can’t know but that it was inspired by God is undeniable.  She took very expensive oil and poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair. In response, Judas, full of the knowledge of good and evil, misjudged Mary. John 12:3-8

When we judge others using our knowledge of good and evil it will look exactly like Judas’ reaction. Judas proudly expressed good ideas: don’t waste, give to the poor.  By appearances, he was right but righteousness is not always obvious.  In truth, the obvious is often the covering for what is really taking place. By her obedience, Mary was fulfilling her God given mission to anoint Jesus prior to his burial since circumstances surrounding His death would prevent it.  The law needed fulfilling and Mary was the vessel obediently willing to carry it out.

Previously, Mary made her choice. She chose the Tree of Life as her favorite food.  She didn’t care what criticisms she would suffer while Martha labored around her making her look inactive and insensitive.  Again, she didn’t care how it would look that she bathed Jesus’ feet in costly oil.  Those who eat from the Tree of Life are often given missions that don’t set well with others’ knowledge of good and evil.  It is so easy to judge, but we must not.  When we do judge it will feel dark and angry.  Our mind will race with righteous anger that will feel very different from the pure wisdom from above:

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.  James 3:17
